Every answer you've gotten is wrong - Summerlin is nowhere near the strip and all of the answers mention strip hotels.

Summerlin has three major casino/resorts, Red Rock, the Rampart (might have changed names actually - haven't been up there in a while) and the Suncoast. Suncoast would be the cheapest of the three, but still might be a bit pricey. Red Rock is big $$$ but top-notch & beautiful - visit it even if you don't stay there.
Closer than the strip but just outside Summerlin is Santa Fe Station - another fine Station's resort that will most likely be cheaper than Suncoast and the rest, but will still be comfortable and convenient.
References :
Live here

the prices they listed, from what i understand are during the week, on the weekend, room prices can triple. what we did when i went, 3 years ago was, we stayed tuesday-thursday night at a hotel on the strip(i forgot what it was called, its not there anymore though, it was between new york, new york and the monte carlo, i think planet hollywood is there now, but i digress), and on friday, we moved to a chain motel off the strip before we flew back
References :
trip in 2005

Both properties are about equal in terms of atmosphere and quality so I think your decision should focus on location and the room itself. I read a lot of guest reviews at tripadvisor.com during late May and early June when I was planning my 18th trip to Las Vegas, and one comment that comes up repeatedly for Mirage is that the rooms are small, even the suites. The least expensive suite Mirage offers is exactly the same size as their basic room except that it has an extra bathroom. Since you said "family" I'm guessing you mean more than two people... and even though you may not spend much time in the room, you don't want to feel like sardines squished together in there.

So first I'd determine whether Mirage or NY NY offers the best room size and configuration to match the number of people you have.

Then consider whether you want to be at the south end or north end of the strip. The NY NY area has a somewhat more festive and crowded atmosphere, I call it the "south stripolopolis" because Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur, NY NY, Tropicana and MGM are all interconnected with tunnels and pedestrian bridges. This allows easy walking access to six megaresorts, and they're all casual touristy properties.

Compared to the north end of the strip where at Mirage you'd be across the street from the super upscale Venetian - Palazzo - Wynn - Encore complex. It feels a bit less touristy in that area - these are elegant properties that don't have silly gimmicks like a sphinx or Statue of Liberty or medieval castle. Just south of Mirage is Caesars with the huge Forum Shops mall; north of Mirage is Treasure Island and then the huge Fashion Show mall.

So both areas have plenty of attractions in close walking distance.

Once you get past Encore then you're at the extreme north end of the strip, which has become desolate since Stardust, Westward Ho and Frontier were demolished. All that's left is Sahara, Riviera, Circus Circus and Slots A Fun.
References :
http://hubpages.com/hub/New-York-New-York-Las-Vegas

My favorite part of the strip is near the MIrage. I hate the other end with NY NY and MGM Grand.
Stay at Mirage and eat at Carnigie Deli! YUM
Best buffet is next door at Treasure Island. Accross the street is Harrah's which has the free shuttle to Rio. On the other side of Treasure Island is a mall that has some great shops and restaurants.
Also on the other side of the road is Wynn, Venetian and the Palazzo. All AWESOME hotels! :)
